Spanish Cultural Day
29 October, 2022

On the 29th Of October, the Spanish faculty of Box Hill had a cultural day.

Students created a day of the dead altar by decorating a table with their paper cutting artwork. Students enjoyed learning about the Day of the Dead and took part in trivia and other activities.

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated on November 2nd. On this day, it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Many people celebrate this day by visiting the graves of loved ones and setting up altars with their favourite foods, drink, and photos.

La Catrina is one of the most recognizable figures of Day of the Dead. A towering female skeleton with vibrant make up and a flamboyant feathery hat.

On the day of the dead, people dress as a “Catrina” in traditional clothing and make up.

Students also took part in a salsa class, which was taught by two special guests.

Students from all 3 Spanish groups participated, and learnt steps to the music, salsa dancing, and rhythm.

It was a fantastic day for everyone.
