Model United Nations Conference in German 2018
26 July, 2018
This year, 7 students from the German Distance Education VCE class for the first time participated in the Model United Nations Conference. It took place on the June 22 and was held entirely in German, obliging students to practise their second language skills.
A Model UN Conference is a creative simulation of the UN General Assembly in which students represent member states of the United Nations. Teams consisting of 3-4 students, from different schools, represent different countries. The VSL students represented New Zealand and Brazil. It was a great opportunity to learn about international relations, the UN system and its global impact overall, while developing negotiation and public speaking skills in German.
The topic this year was Asylum Seekers and Refugees: A Global Humanitarian Crisis. After preparing the participating students during a seminar and Skype sessions, we had a successful time at the conference. It was amazing to see all the students from Victoria discuss an important matter using a full range of German vocabulary and demonstrating their full proficiency in it.
All in all, it was a successful day and the students showed their best presentation and negotiation skills in a foreign language. They also made use of the experience by preparing themselves for the detailed study and upcoming SACs, as migration will be one of the main topics.
