Virtual Spanish Excursion
30 August, 2021

Recently at VSL Collingwood College, Bernardita Arias, Grace Salinas and Carlos Franco ran a virtual excursion. It was like going to a cultural festival with a lot of joy and language around. The Collingwood F-10 students participated in cultural and linguistic immersion activities and some classes from Footscray City College and Caroline Springs VCL centres also joined in.

Through multigrade activities, students explored Art artefacts from Mexico and Spain. The Altar flowers, Dali's clocks and Picasso's Guernica inspired our students to create their own unique Art pieces. It was lovely to have level 7-10 students writing about the meaning of flowers and colours for themselves as per family and cultural background.

Music took us to Peru, Spain, Venezuela and helped us to recall one of the most popular children's TV show in Latin Americ - Nubeluz.

It was amazing when the children could hear greetings and shout out an Hola for the countries they related to. Our Collingwood College Bernardita was excited to say Hola to Chile and Grace to Peru.

'Mi gente', 'Canta Conmigo', 'Un lindo día' and the classic 'El baile del gorila' all turned the virtual excursion into a real party-like festival when parents and families joined the dances.

Another interesting element, made possible by technology, was the presence of special international guests - Felipe Paz and Guadalupe Rogel as language and cultural ambassadors from Colombia and Mexico, dancing and interacting with all students and families. We hope to continue with these inter-center activities in the future. It was great to have the spirit that although the event was over, children continued singing and dancing with the "Que siga la fiesta song'.
