Sinhala Concert - Carwatha VSL
06 December, 2017
The annual concert of the Sinhala faculty was held at the theatre of Carwatha College. It was a showcase of the dancing, singing, acting, communicating and Sinhala language skills of our students. The whole program was compered by students. The concert started by lighting the traditional lamp followed by the school song. After the school song, welcome speeches were given by students both in English and Sinhala. Special speeches were given by Area Manager of East 2, Mr Kevin Ryan, Centre Supervisor Ms Judith McAuliffe and Mr Sandeep Hettiarachchi, a past pupil. Sandeep shared his experience as a Sinhala language student at VSL and the advantages of studying Sinhala Language as a VCE subject. There were 13 performances by students starting from a beautiful pooja dance by a group of students. This dance was choreographed and trained by a Year 12 student. Some other dances were also choreographed by students themselves. In addition to the Sri Lankan dances, there were short dramas, action songs, Sinhala folk poems and songs. Every student in the faculty was given the opportunity to participate in the concert, which they did with courage and enthusiasm After the performances, trophies were awarded to best performing students at the language competitions held in September. Trophies were given to best performers in writing, speaking and recitation from each year level. Also, a special trophy was awarded to Tharani Nipunika Abeykoonge, who got the highest rank for Sinhala language at the VCE Examination in 2016 from the Carwatha Centre. After the votes of thanks and national anthems, parents, students and invitees were served with scrumptious Sri Lankan food. This annual concert was not only a celebration of the acquisition of Sinhala language skills by students at the centre, but also provided a platform to display their dancing, singing, acting and organizational skills. In addition, it provided the students an excellent opportunity to work in teams to achieve success. I am sure our students are looking forward to the next annual concert. I thank the Area Manager, Mr Kevin Ryan, Centre Supervisor Ms Judith McAuliffe, Assistant Centre Supervisor, Mr Barrie Skadins, teachers and parents for their support to make our annual concert a great success. Mrs Rohini Jayacody Sinhalese Co-ordinator
