French Seminar and Excursion to van Gogh Exhibition
05 May, 2017
French Distance Education courses place great emphasis on culture and offer students vast opportunities to explore the rich world of French history and art. Every year the French faculty takes Year 10, 11 and 12 Distance Education students to the National Gallery of Victoria for a guided tour of the permanent exhibition of French art, as part of one of our seminars. This year we were lucky to be able to combine a Seminar with a very special visit to the National Gallery of Victoria, which is hosting the significant “Vincent van Gogh and the Seasons” exhibition. In the morning the students participated in intensive language lessons which included mastering of vocabulary related to the topic of art and paintings and describing impressionist paintings, using expressions appropriate for their language level. This was followed by a listening comprehension activity with people expressing their views of a particular painting. Students learned to express their personal perception of and reaction to each work of art. After a short break for lunch, students accompanied by their French teachers went to the National Gallery of Victoria for a one hour lecture by a member of the Gallery staff and a viewing of the exhibition. “I liked the gallery. I liked the depth of colour, how you could see how he (van Gogh) used colours. I think it was absolutely brilliant”, said Katarina, one of a large group of Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 students of French who attended the seminar and exhibition. The students came from Benalla, Colac, Kyneton, Mt Beauty, West Gippsland (Warragul), Warrnambool, and there were a few from Melbourne, too! They came to see the work of the great man in his wheatfields and in the brilliance of his colours. Colourful…brilliant… A special thank you to Helen Rich, Head of the French Department, for all her organisation.
